Nothing's Been Decided Yet
Newham hasn't formally decided anything on the free permit and free hour. An options report is expected in September 2026 and there's nothing to challenge yet. So for now, we're watching closely, and we'll flag it the moment that changes on our News page.
We'd Rather This Never Got Legal
Court is a last resort, not the plan. All we want is what the law already asks for anyway: a decision that's lawful, evidence-based, and properly consulted on. Every page on this site is here to help the Council get it right, not to catch it getting it wrong.
Tower Hamlets Shows Both Sides of This
A group of residents in Tower Hamlets, Save Our Safer Streets, took their council to court over a decision to rip out its Liveable Streets scheme. They lost the first round, then won on appeal in January 2026, when the Court ruled the decision unlawful and quashed it. The council's now appealing to the Supreme Court, due to be heard in February 2027.
Ordinary residents can beat a council in court, but even when they win it can take years. That's why we'd rather Newham got this right the first time.
If It Ever Came to That
We don't want to go to court but, if it's the right thing to do, we will. The more residents stand behind this campaign the stronger that position becomes, and the less likely it is we'll ever need it. Join us, and we'll keep you posted every step of the way.
